St Mark’s Club

The story of Manchester City starts with St Mark’s Club in 1880. Founded by two church wardens of St Marks Church of England, West Gorton, Manchester, the football club was to provide an alternative to unemployment, drunkeness and loutish behaviour of young men in East Manchester.

Origanally the team wore black jerseys bearing a white cross, showing the club’s origins as a church side.

THe club became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and subsequently Manchester City in 1894
